The Spirit of Giving is Human

Jim Switzer | 11-18-08

Most people have been a victim of a natural disaster, or are related to someone who has. The tremendous loss of those affected by the fires in LA is something for which I, personally, am greatly sympathetic. In our current financial climate, loss is an experience that we should all fear on some level. While the fires in LA have taken the possessions of thousands, the financial situation in the US and around the world has taken the jobs, possessions, and dreams of millions more. A gift to those who have already experienced loss from those of us who still have our homes, jobs, families, and lives intact is not a hand out, it’s not about being democratic or liberal, nor extremist, it is human nature. So often there is an excuse uttered that relieves the speaker from sympathy: well, they shouldn’t live there, they should have had a back up plan, etc. Natural disasters can happen everywhere, and job loss is seldom backed up with an immediately implementable plan, so just lend a helping hand, you’ll feel good about yourself, and it might be the help that gives someone enough of a boost to get back on their feet. For those who feel lucky that they are ‘not them,’ express your sympathy with a gift, whether it is money, food, clothing, or shelter for someone who has experienced a loss, the act will be that of a human, and isn’t that the one thing that we all share.

Thanks.
