Dear Apple Regarding First Class Citizens
Thomas Ingham | 02-19-09Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the modeless, rootless, taskless dialog.
Anyone who’s ever download anything from Omnigroup will know exactly what I’m about to discuss today. Download a disk image which automatically expands on your desktop, don’t touch anything and you’ll be fine. If however you’re like me and attempt to multi-task while you’re downloading updates and such and you’re pretty much screwed. What follows after switching windows while the download is expanding is a frustrating exercise in window rearrangement.
As I was flipping through my Spaces today trying to find the dialog for a disk image that was mounting (and taking a rather long time to do so) it occurred to me.
“Why isn’t the disk mounter utility a full-fledged application? Why not just use Disk Utility for all of that nonsense (including the eponymously named BOM[b] Helper?”
I should think that this sort of thing would be built-in to the minds of the Apple engineers at this point, but apparently it’s not. The only reliable solution I’ve found to the problem is using Spaces to toggle through desktops, and then using expose on all windows to see if the dialog slides back out into view.
Please Dear Apple, fix this. Anyone out there know of any better workarounds?
