Learning HTML & CSS For A Graphic Designer - Pt. 1

Graphic Design Schools Aren’t Getting You Ready For Web Design
How is it possible that you spend a ton of money going to school to learn design and they really don’t address half of what you need to know to make you successful in your own field of study? They have asked hundreds of professionals and companies in the field, “What skill set is essential to be a graphic designer in today’s world?” And from these replies they model a curriculum in which they think you will have all the tools necessary to have a successful & lucrative career. Then let me interject and ask this, “Why was I allowed take only two classes in Web Design if that is a MAJOR part of our industry?”
To make it simple, I’m a graphic designer who has a bachelors in visual communication, I’m a know it all when it come to Print Design but when it comes to Web Design well I’m like a …. well, it’s surprising to some of my fellow co-workers that I could study Graphic Design and not even learn the basics of html. Let me just say I had two Web Design classes: one a site architecture class just studying proper layout and understanding user navigation, the other making a amateur-at-best site using WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get). If that was their idea of preparation they had better change it for the future of their students. I can’t fully blame them, there were always talks between designers of the idea that “print is dying,” but I scoffed at the idea. There were plenty of Print Design jobs! Well there is a answer to that, there are certain markets. But it doesn’t matter, you haven’t to be skilled in both mediums if you want to become a more attractive potential hire and be able to fetch decent wages. Print Design is a fantastic asset, but being able to integrate fully with Web Design really puts you over the edge in a company’s eyes.
My Plan To Take My Print Design Skills And Learn How To Apply Them To Web Design
So here it is; I’m going to learn how to build a website. From the ground up. For the next little bit, all the blogs that I post are going to be weekly update on what I’ve learned in html and css to enable me to take my skills from the paper to the monitor and the challenges that I have faced. My hope is that there are others like me so I hope they find this Blog and it pushes them to do the same. We’re great designers and its time for us to take on the web! So check back with me over the next few weeks - I’m sure there will be some great bits of advice, rants, aha moments and more.
